What is SHSMUN? The Southern High School Model United Nations Conference (SHSMUN) is a Model U.N. conference organized by high school students for high school students. Unique to only SHSMUN, the students run the conference by writing topic papers and chairing their own committees. SHSMUN is a serious, well developed Model U.N. conference, where delegates participate in comprehensive debates in more than ten committees ranging from Disarmament to SHSMUN’s own General committee. SHSMUN’s delegates are expected to bring their best “game” by researching their countries’ positions, delivering speeches, and writing thorough resolutions that deliver solutions to their committee’s issues. It’s not all about the competition at SHSMUN, though. Delegates meet, laugh with, and befriend other high school students from across the state of Tennessee and southeastern United States. Located in the fabulous Chattanoogan Hotel, the conference is regularly complimented on its location, which is surrounded by the clean downtown area of Chattanooga. While most conferences are dropping General Assembly-where all committees come together to debate all resolutions-SHSMUN embraces General Assembly to promote leadership and public speaking skills among delegates. During the closing ceremony, one idea is on every delegate’s mind: I can’t wait for the next SHSMUN!
How Model UN (SHSMUN) works!
Students are on Country teams which consist of 9 committees (students). Each student on the team is responsible for one committee. Committees have 3 topics the student are responsible to know.
OK, the information of the topics must be from the chosen country's point of view. For example, one of the committees is Human Rights and one of the topics could be "Rights of Persons with Disabilities." If, for example, your country is Franksland, the student must know/defend the stance of Franksland on this topic. The student must stay “in position” or in the view of their country. This is tons of fun!!
So research of the country & committee topics, 3 Position papers & 3 Resolution papers (how the country would like to promote/end topic). See how to write a Position paper & Resolution paper, Doc’s tab. Plus in class time.
